Semi-Arian Sabbatarian: Acts 3:26 and Semi-Arianism

“Unto you first God, having raised up His Son Jesus, sent Him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.” (Acts 3:26).

This closing statement from Peter was simply a reiteration and conclusion of his appeal to the Jews in verses 19 and 20, “Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; and He shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you”.

Peter’s call to the Jews proclaimed that upon their repentance that day they would have the presence of God when He would blot out their sins. That He would send His Son to them that day was the promise that Jesus gave Peter and John and the other disciples before He suffered His crucifixion.

“If ye love Me, keep My commandments.

And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another [identical] Comforter [His reconciled Father sending Himself who had always been such a Wonderful Counselor to them], that He may abide with you for ever;

Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you….

He that hath My commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him….

If a man love Me, he will keep My words: and My Father will love him, and We will come unto him, and make Our abode with him.” (John 14:15-18,21,23).

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the … the Son… teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” (Matt. 28:19,20).

And so the apostles taught that Jesus personally comes in His Father’s Spirit to His newborn children. Through His Father He is their personal Saviour. And they baptized in His name showing that it was His work in their deliverance from Satan. It was He who not reigned over their new hearts and controlled their new spirits. As He had promised, “A new heart will I give you, and a new Spirit will I put within you.” (Eze. 36:26).

Peter had earlier preached a similar message, “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” (Acts 2:38).

“…they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” (Acts 8:16).

Like the other apostles, Paul also preached that the Father sends the presence of Jesus into the souls that are humbled by the Father’s Law.

“But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under [the curse of] the Law,

To redeem them that were under [the curse of] the Law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.” (Gal. 4:4-6).

David understood the same about Jesus coming to the needy soul.

“Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid Thine hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.

Whither shall I go from Thy Spirit? or whither shall I flee from Thy presence?

If I ascend up into heaven, Thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, Thou art there.

If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

Even there shall Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand shall hold me.” (Ps. 139:5-10).

Notice the Spirit-Presence connection in the parallelism of David’s poetry. “Whither shall I go from Thy Spirit? or whither shall I flee from Thy Presence?” (Ps. 139:7).

“Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy holy Spirit from me.” (Ps. 51:11).

“Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in Thy presence is fulness of joy; at Thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” (Ps. 16:11).

Prayer didn’t just bring Jesus down to David, it brought David up to Jesus. Christ’s Spirit reconnected heaven and earth.

“…that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; and He shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you.” (Acts 3:19,20).

To the Bible prophets Christ’s “Spirit” was synonymous with His “Presence”. His Spirit is His and His Father’s active presence. This is why They are called the living God.

“As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after Thee, O God.

My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?” (Ps. 42:1,2).

Acts 3:26 is unique in that it reveals the apostles’ understanding that peace with God comes from His restored presence, His Spirit—the Spirit of God, through His ambassador, the Spirit of Jesus. The Spirit of God is the presence of God, filtered from all destructive power using Christ’s humanity, as well as time, distance, and shielding.

Below is a list of versions of Acts 3:26. Some versions rearrange Peter’s words, giving the impression he was not saying that Jesus came that day, but that he was just mentioning that Jesus had come during His 3½ year ministry. But, by trying to make the verse simpler to understand, they altered the meaning, thus corrupting the text.

But, it’s the sequence of Peter’s statement that reveals Christ as the Spirit. Over and over again we have the sequence, “God, having raised up His child Jesus, did send him” Young’s Literal Translation. Rather than the modern version’s interpretation, that God sent His Son (AD 27) and then raised Him from the dead (AD 31), the original text said that God raised His Son from the dead (AD 31), and then sent Him the day of the miraculous healing (≈AD 32). The verb tense of present perfect progressive, “having raised up Jesus” means that Jesus had been resurrected and had ascended to His Father, ready ever afterward to be sent for our healing physically or spiritually, or both.

With the correct interpretation we see that Jesus in Spirit came to the Jews the day Peter was speaking. He came without observation, invisibly. He healed the lame man, and He converted them all from sin. Jesus healed both body and souls. Since the Garden of Eden, He has been the Spirit of blessing by whom all have ever been born again.

“All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made. In Him was life; and the life was the light of men.” (John 1:3,4).

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on Me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto My Father….

Yet a little while, and the world seeth Me no more; but ye see Me: because I live, ye shall live also.” (John 14:12,19).

Acts 3:26 The Greek word pais can mean either “servant” or “son.” (See Strong’s Concordance, Gr. 3816.) The Aramaic is clearly “son.” Notice how many times in the book of Acts that the followers of Christ preached the resurrection. The power and virtue of the cross can never be diminished; however, it is the resurrection of Christ that became the apostolic center of their preaching in the book of Acts.
